Anishinaabe songwriter & actor
whose name means springtime
Zeegwon Shilling is an 18-year-old Anishinaabe artist from Wasauksing First Nation — a self-taught pianist, guitarist, songwriter, and actor whose name carries the meaning of springtime: renewal, fast-flowing waters, a new cycle beginning.
He is the great-nephew of the renowned Ojibway painter Arthur Shilling, and has been
nurtured by a family with a deep respect for artistic expression. In 2022, singer iskwē
named Zeegwon an emerging protégé, awarding him the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize
— a $10,000 honour celebrating artists who will define the future of the performing arts sector.
Currently in pre-production on his debut recordings with Littlebit Records, Zeegwon is
building toward a body of work that reflects his Anishinaabe identity and the
song-writing voice he has been developing since childhood.
A video of a young Zeegwon performing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on piano is shared on Facebook. It reaches 100,000 views in three days — over 600,000 in total — introducing an Anishinaabe voice to an audience that had never heard him before.
Zeegwon makes his professional acting debut as a guest star on the second season of CBC's acclaimed series The Coroner, in an episode written by and starring Indigenous talent Shannon Masters and Tamara Podemski.
Juno Award-winning artist iskwē names Zeegwon her protégé at the prestigious Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prizes, awarding him $10,000 and recognition as one of the artists who will define the future of the performing arts sector in Canada.
Zeegwon performs live at Union Summer in downtown Toronto, sharing his developing songwriting and stage presence with a new audience.
Now signed to Littlebit Records under the management of iskwē, Zeegwon enters the studio for the first time to record original songs. His first music is coming.
